Over the years, I have had similar conversations with others who were equally interested in the idea of starting an AEC Knowledge Management community.
Think emerging trends, new strategies, and theory instead of practice. Go way out to what might be possible and tell us what we should be watching for in the future of knowledge management.
20 slides and 20 seconds per slide. Teach us what’s possible now in knowledge management that our community can apply in their practices today. Think tactics instead of strategy. Application over theory. Best practices and case studies.
Each session’s talks will be capped by a panel discussion and questions and answer session. Once the panel discussion runs out of steam we’ll switch over to the breakouts.
Breakouts are your chance to build on your talk and interact with your audience. We’ll have flipcharts and small breakout spaces available for collaborative knowledge building.

 | Thursday Morning April 8 How We Build
| We are making great strides with integrated project delivery - updating contracts to reduce conflict and align incentives. We are now modeling in 3, 4, and even 5 dimensions – finding conflicts early and often. Digital models are in the trailer. These are great things, but there is a “campaign promise” from the move to BIM that we must re-evaluate. Can we build smarter? Is it possible to embed more knowledge into the design and construction process – reducing waste and rework? How are AEC firms transforming the additional data and information they are collecting through BIM and IPD into actionable knowledge? | | | 6:30 AM - 7:30 AM Breakfast | | | 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM Welcome / Opening Remarks | | | 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Blue Sky | “Parametric Design Knowledge”– Volker Mueller, Bentley Systems “Design-Build-Bid: A New Delivery Process”– John Moebes, Crate&Barrel “Award-Winning BIMs”– Calvin Kam, Stanford University - CIFE | | 9:00 AM - 9:30 AM Panel Discussion / Break | | | 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Pecha Kucha | “Collaboration, Technology, and Sustainability”– David Virtue, IntegratedProjects.org “Architects Don’t Think: The Role of Thinking in Architectural Process”– Paul Coates, University of Salford “Building Element Models and Cataloging Tools”– Andrew Arnold, Reed Construction Data “Game Development: An Unlikely Muse”– Justin Quimby, Quimby Heavy Industries “CAD Metaphors”– Josh Lobel, The Josh Lobel Initiative “Engaging the Tools”– David Fano, CASE Design, Inc. “Translations from Model to Building”– Michael Kilkelly, Gehry Partners, LLP | | 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM Panel Discussion / Break | | | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Breakouts | | |

 | Thursday Afternoon April 8 How We Practice SPONSORED BY NEWFORMA
 | There is no doubt that the business side of the AEC industry is a target rich environment for anyone interested in applying knowledge management strategies and tactics. When compared with the difficulty of transferring the knowledge required for designing buildings - the practice sides of our firms are rich with information and processes begging to be converted to explicit knowledge. How can we exploit opportunities to create, capture and share knowledge assets to leverage ourselves and our firms? What can we learn from knowledge-driven practices? | | | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Lunch | | | 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Blue Sky | “Unpacking the Mental Blender”– Erin Rae Hoffer, Autodesk “There are four P’s in Practice”– Bob Batcheler, Newforma “Collaborative Knowledge – Synaptic Connections”– Eric McKinney, Gensler | | 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM Panel Discussion / Break | | | 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Pecha Kucha | “Communicating Value to Your Clients and Prospects”– Nancy Kleppel, Nancy Kleppel Consulting “Embracing the Unusual: Confessions of a Five-Minute Manager”– Delrae Weerts, Time Counts, Inc. “Operational Frameworks”– Jessica Hickey, 1029 Consulting “Where’s the Intelligence in BI?”– JJ Brantingham, Sebesta Blomberg “Knowledge, Knowledge Everywhere ...”– Darren Rizza, Satellier “Crafting The Digital Project Story”– Brad Horst, Einhorn Yaffee Prescott | | 3:30 PM - 4:00 PM Panel Discussion / Break | | | 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Breakouts | | | 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM Cocktail Reception | | |

 | Friday Morning April 9 How We Collaborate SPONSORED BY AXOMIC
 | Our project teams are faced with delivering projects across offices, disciplines, software platforms, software versions, times zones, language barriers, and four generations of cultural diversity in the workforce -- as if the increasing complexity of buildings wasn’t enough. How will we move from “keeping our heads above water” to leveraging the collective knowledge of an integrated design team? What are the emerging best practices for collaboration in use today? | | | 6:30 AM - 7:30 AM Breakfast | | | 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM Opening Remarks | | | 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Blue Sky | “Managing Aspiration and Complexity”– Doris Pulsifer, SOM, LLP “The Reemerging Midcareer Professional’s Companion”– Randy Deutsch, LEED AP “On Collaboration”– Markku Alllison, AIA | | 9:00 AM - 9:30 AM Panel Discussion / Break | | | 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Pecha Kucha | “Stretch: A Parametric Model for Communication”– Michael Bernard, Virtual Practice Consulting “The Unifying Force”– Lira Luis, Atelier Lira Luis, LLC “The Three Ages of DAM”– Peter Walsham, Axomic “Social Media Inside Corporate Walls”– Jennifer Carrel, Organizational Development Consulting “A Wiki for Your Thoughts”– Bret Tushaus, Eppstein Uhen Architects “Crowdsourcing Design”– Federico Negro, CASE Design, Inc. | | 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM Panel Discussion / Break | | | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Breakouts | | |

 | Friday Afternoon April 9 How We Learn
| It has been said that the only true differentiator is how fast your organization learns. We all know that our next generation brings an unprecedented understanding of digital tools to our workplace. Yet we also know that BIM and IPD are going to require our newest hires to learn how design, detail, and build earlier in their careers now more than at any point in history. At the same time, our entire workforce is going to have to become comfortable with parametric design tools. How are we going to build our next generation of architects, engineers, and contractors? How are firms bridging the divide between those who have technological skills and those who have building knowledge? | | | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Lunch | | | 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Blue Sky | “Leveraging Learning”– Pam Britton, The Knowledge Environment “A 12-Step Program for a Learning Organization”– John Soter, ZweigWhite “Dinosaur Lessons: Learn or Die”– Laurie Dreyer, Anshen+Allen | | 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM Panel Discussion / Break | | | 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Pecha Kucha | “Storytelling: The Key to Marketing Knowledge”– Anne Scarlett, Scarlett Consulting “Teaching people.
